From 1983 until early 2008, I lived in a village called Killamarsh in North-east Derbyshire. I've since moved on to pastures new to start a new life.

Killamarsh village is located in North Derbyshire, although it sometimes gets a bit of an identity crisis because its postcode is S21, a Sheffield one.

Killamarsh is like a lot of ex-mining villages in that most of the people who live here were not born in the village. It's become a suburb of Sheffield and most residents work there or in Chesterfield or Rotherham which are also near-by.

Here are some old photos of Killamarsh by kind permission of the Picture The Past website and with grateful thanks to Mr. Vincent Hopkinson. There are 301 old photographs of Killamarsh on the Picture The Past website many of which were donated by Mr. Hopkinson. I have been granted special permission to reproduce these images here by the Picture the Past website

There are moves afoot to re-open the canal which once ran through the Killamarsh village. The Chesterfield-Worksop canal has been renovated right up to nearby Kiveton. I have some pictures below of the Chesterfield -Worksop canal which I took at Shireoaks. This is a taste of how Killamarsh could look in the future when the canal is re-opened.

Some parts of Killamarsh are still experiencing the fall-out from the closure of the pits in the mid-eighties. There is a regeneration scheme in progress which is giving the village a bit of a face-lift. Hopefully the canal renovation programme will help too.

Killamarsh is close to The Rother Valley Country Park. My brother Peter took some photos there last year and you can see them on his website by clicking here.
